Distracted driving is a huge problem in the United States. It’s one of the main causes of motor vehicle accidents, and it’s something that we all need to be aware of. There are a few main types of distractions that can occur while driving.
Visual distractions are anything that takes your eyes off of the road. This can include looking at your phone, passengers in the car, or even something outside of the car. It’s important to keep your eyes on the road at all times while driving.
Looking away from the road for even a few seconds can lead to a motor vehicle accident. If you must look away from the road, be sure to do so carefully and for as short a time as possible.
Some visual distractions can be avoided altogether by not having them in the car in the first place. For example, if you know you’re going to be tempted to look at your phone, put it in the trunk or glove compartment before you start driving.
Cognitive distractions are anything that takes your mind off of driving. This can include daydreaming, thinking about something else or being preoccupied with passengers in the car. Just like with visual distractions, it’s important to keep your mind focused on driving.
If you find yourself getting distracted, try to refocus your attention on the road to avoid accidents. If you’re having trouble doing this, pull over to the side of the road and take a break.
Physical distractions are anything that takes your hands off of the steering wheel. This can include eating, drinking, smoking or fidgeting with something in the car.
It’s important to keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times while driving. If you must do something that requires the use of your hands, pull over to the side of the road and stop the car before doing so.
