Car accidents rank as one of the worst experiences for people who have been involved in one. Although it’s easy to panic, you should keep a level head and deal with the situation. These are steps you should immediately take after a West Virginia collision.
Get to safety
Check for injuries and remain at the scene. If your vehicle is immovable, leave it where it is; keeping yourself and your passengers safe should always be the first priority.
If it’s possible, pull over to the side of the road. Avoid driving away from the scene as it could lead to hit-and-run charges later, even if you were not at fault.
Call 911 for help
Any car accident resulting in injuries, death or property damage requires the police to be called to the scene. Call 911 to get the police and emergency medical personnel there so that an accident report can be made and EMTs can tend to anyone with injuries. Ask the responding officer for their name and badge number and find out how to get a copy of the accident report.
Exchange information
You and the other driver should exchange names, contact information and anything related to your vehicles, licenses and auto insurance. While you do this, you should also make note of the other driver’s vehicle, including the make and model, color and approximate year. Taking photos of the vehicles and scene is helpful as well. Don’t make conversation other than to obtain information.
Get witnesses’ names and contact information in case you need their testimony later. Recording their statements can also help your case.
Seek medical attention
Seek medical attention to check for injuries. Some car accidents result in catastrophic injuries that may not show symptoms for hours or days. Erring on the side of caution is best when your health is concerned.
