Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs as a result of sudden trauma to the head, causing damage to the brain. The severity of such injuries can vary greatly, ranging from mild concussions to severe and life-threatening injuries.

Severe traumatic brain injury may cause a number of serious side effects and complications, including but not limited to the following.

Increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases

Due to the disruption of brain function and potential damage to neurons and neural pathways, individuals who have experienced severe traumatic brain injury face an increased risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases later in life. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) have been linked to previous instances of severe TBI.

Coma or vegetative state

Severe damage to the brain can result in a coma or vegetative state. A coma is a state of unconsciousness where the individual is unresponsive to external stimuli. It may last for days, weeks, or even months, depending on the extent of the brain injury. In some cases, individuals may transition into a vegetative state, where they have periods of wakefulness but remain unaware of their surroundings and unable to interact purposefully with their environment. Both coma and vegetative states can be devastating for the individual and their loved ones, as they may require long-term care and support.

Physical disabilities

Severe traumatic brain injury can lead to a range of physical disabilities, depending on the areas of the brain affected. These may include paralysis, muscle weakness, impaired coordination and difficulties with balance and mobility. Physical therapy and rehabilitation are often necessary to help individuals regain function and improve their quality of life, but some disabilities may be permanent.

If an injury has been caused someone else’s negligence or intentional conduct, seeking legal guidance can help victims or their loved ones determine ways of seeking recompense for medical expenses, long-term care, lost wages and other damages resulting from the injury. This effort can potentially help to ensure that affected individuals and their families receive the necessary support and resources to cope with the challenges ahead.
